People have some good questions about mooring maintenance. In this post, we describe what goes into maintaining your mooring every other year, as required by law.
Your mooring pendants and buoy are the most obvious parts of your mooring, the easiest for you to see and handle. The city requires us to paint your mooring number in contrasting color on top of the mooring; we also put fresh bottom paint on the lower part to retard marine growth.
Your mooring pendants and shackles which connect them to your mooring buoy often need replacement, so we usually splice up a new set of lines and replace shackles. We also seize the shackle pins with monel wire to discourage them from working loose.
The rest of your mooring tackle spends most of its existence underwater, so it’s harder for you to see. When we come pay a visit with one of our service barges, we drop the spuds down and hoist your gear entirely out of the water, ballast and all. We blast your gear free of dirt and growth so we can weigh and inspect your ballast and chain for wear and galvanic action. If your chain is still serviceable, we record the weight of your ballast and lower your gear back into place with one of our temporary mooring buoys, so we can take yours back to our shop for painting.
We provide turn–key mooring maintenance service complete with all necessary Harbor Department paperwork for your biannual mooring inspection.

We can replace your internal rod style mooring buoys with more secure chain through style floats. Mooring buoys with internal rod transfer load from pendant to mooring chain. There is no good non-destructive means to visually inspect or certify the condition of those internal rods. We call these mystery rod moorings. In contrast, the chain–through moorings enable inspection of every inch of the mooring. The chain–through mooring buoy design delivers peace of mind.
In addition to painting the bottom of the mooring buoy with antifouling paint, we repaint your buoy’s identification numbers on the buoy top. A finishing touch is the addition of a new yellow polypropylene mooring spreader line with floats to make easier picking up your mooring. We can custom fabricate these to fit your mooring to save you the trouble. We can add snap hooks to the spreader line ends to make the spreader line easier to retrieve or deploy if that is your preference.

Onshore moorings may moor boats up to eighteen feet length overall. These usually terminate at a post driven into the beach, which is why we call them (on)shore moorings. The post is usually a 4″ x 4″ length of treated wood driven into the sand. A pulley and line are affixed to the post. This enables pulling the moored boat closer to the beach or mooring to serve one’s purpose. Main features of our shore mooring service include:
· Complete inspection and overhaul of moorings
· Shorelines replaced with keeper rings, floats and stainless steel pulleys
· Shore posts replaced and installed
· Shore posts use only treated wood
· Wall rings installed
We can handle all required Harbor Department paperwork along with servicing your shore mooring. We will even send you a thirty day notice in advance of your next required service.
